Speech Delay in Children

A speech delay means a child’s speech is developing later than expected, or is harder to understand than usual for their age. It is one of the most common reasons parents come to Lingo. Some children catch up on their own, and others benefit from support. The hard part is often knowing which, and that is exactly what a speech and language therapist can help you work out.

Signs by age

These are general guides, not strict rules, but they help you see roughly where a child is expected to be:

  • By 12 months: babbling, responding to their name, waving.
  • By 2 years: around 50 words or more, starting to put two words together.
  • By 3 years: short sentences, and strangers can understand much of what they say.
  • By 5 years: clear speech, telling simple stories, following instructions.

If your child is some way behind these, it can be worth checking with a therapist.

Speech delay or language delay?

Speech delay is about how clearly a child says sounds and words. Language delay is about understanding and using words and sentences. A child can have one or both. If your worry is more about how much your child understands and says than how clearly they say it, read about language delay instead.

When to seek help

Trust your instinct. If you are worried, or your child is noticeably behind the guides above, an assessment gives you clarity rather than waiting and wondering. You do not need a referral, and you do not have to sit on a waiting list to get started.

How online therapy helps with speech delay

Sessions are built around your child, and for younger children they often focus on coaching you as the parent so the practice continues between sessions. For most speech and language needs, studies show online results comparable to in-person. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is my child just a late talker, or is it a delay?

Both are common, and the line is not always obvious. A short assessment is the clearest way to know, and there is no pressure to commit to ongoing sessions.

Will my child grow out of it?

Some children do, and others need support to catch up. A therapist can help you judge whether to wait or to start now.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book a CORU-registered therapist directly.
